Displaying their outrage over the NYPD’s disrespectful treatment of prominent black minister, Black Law Enforcement Group will attend worship service at Abyssinian Baptist church and hold a press conference after service
For Immediate Release
Press Briefing: The group 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care will hold a press conference immediately after worship service at Abyssinian Baptist church. The group will respond to the NYPD’s disrespectful treatment of Rev. Calvin Butts and his family during the issuance of a parking summons. As allegations of racial profiling and discriminatory law enforcement strategies increase, it is imperative that a review of NYPD documents is conducted. The NYPD should make available all official documents to ascertain if there is unequal enforcement of the law. 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care spokesperson Marq Claxton states, “The treatment of Rev. Calvin Butts is an example of the overzealous and heavy handed enforcement that daily occurs in Black and Latino communities throughout the City. The NYPD must be held accountable for enforcement strategies that are race based.”

The NYPD must be held accountable for enforcement strategies that are race based. We believe the NYPD has 2 separate strategies. One strategy is for the minority communities and the other for affluent areas of the city. ”
We demand:
· A complete racial demographic audit of all NYPD arrests, summonses and stop/frisk forms.
· A complete review of enforcement strategies
· The Civil Rights Committee of the City Council to conduct immediate hearings to examine the alleged Civil/Human rights violations committed by the NYPD
