Law Enforcement organization calls for the removal of New York City Council members Peter Vallone Jr. and Larry Seabrook from their chair positions on the Public Safety Committee and the Civil Rights Committee (respectively) for failing to enforce the Police Reporting Law and refusing to engage in comprehensive oversight of the NYPD
For Immediate Release
Press Briefing: 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care is calling for the removal of both New York City Council chairs Peter Vallone Jr. and Larry Seabrook for gross negligence in failing to obtain legally mandated data (Administrative Code 14-150a (5) and failing to adhere to their obligations as chairpersons for their respective committees. The Police Reporting Law, in part, requires the release of specific race and gender information on all stop/question/frisk reports, summonses and arrests generated by the various NYPD patrol and specialized units. Both the Public Safety Committee and the Civil Rights Committee have failed to provide adequate oversight of the NYPD and in doing so has abdicated their responsibility to provide basic protection to the residents of New York. The Public Safety Committee and Civil Rights Committee joint hearing on January 24, 2007 failed to substantively investigate or address the NYPD on the burning issues of police misconduct, brutality and racial profiling, and merely attempted to placate a community demanding immediate re-dress for systemic NYPD abuses. 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care co-founder Marq Claxton states, “Beyond their public pronouncements of complete faith and confidence in Commissioner Kelly, both Mr. Vallone and Mr. Seabrook have not insured that the NYPD is in compliance with reporting important and relevant stop/question/frisk data. The fact that the NYPD has not submitted the quarterly stop/question/frisk data since 2003 is a clear indication that there is no effective agency oversight and allegations of civil rights abuse by the NYPD are being ignored.” 100 Blacks in Law Enforcement Who Care also acknowledges the consistent support Councilmember Charles Barron has given to the law enforcement community.
